Don't Start a Marketplace Launch by Uploading Products

When a company decides to launch on Amazon, TikTok Shop, or another marketplace, the first visible task is usually:

"Let's get the listings up."

That's often too early.

Across marketplace work involving product companies, we've repeatedly seen that the listing is only one piece of the launch.

A marketplace launch is a cross-functional operating project.

Before Listing Creation, Answer These Questions

Can We Legally Sell the Product Here?

For licensed or branded products, confirm marketplace authorization requirements before scaling catalog work.

Is the Seller Account Structured Correctly?

Entity names, brand relationships, payment details, tax settings, and account permissions matter.

What Is the Source of Truth for Product Data?

Where do titles, UPCs, SKUs, dimensions, pricing, imagery, and inventory live?

Where Will Orders Go?

Marketplace.

Map it.

Who Owns Customer Service?

Marketplace response expectations can become an operational requirement.

How Is Inventory Synchronized?

Overselling becomes a customer experience problem very quickly.

Who Owns Compliance?

Marketplace compliance should have an owner, not be treated as a random listing rejection.

Pilot Before Scale

If you have 500 SKUs, resist the instinct to upload 500 first.

Choose a controlled sample.

Prove:

Then scale.

Define Launch Completion

"Store is live" isn't necessarily completion.

A marketplace launch may not be truly operational until:

  • Products are approved
  • Inventory is available
  • Orders flow correctly
  • Fulfillment works
  • Tracking returns
  • Customer support exists
  • Reporting works
  • Someone owns ongoing operation

That's the business outcome.

Treat the Marketplace Like a System

The most expensive problems often happen between platforms.

That means a marketplace project should be managed as an operating system, not a collection of listings.
